Who expects a pop culture magazine to spark a reflection on their beliefs? Not me, but that was the channel of communication today!
I was standing in line at the pharmacy, scanning the impulse buys, when my eye caught a line of a woman’s magazine, with a pretty celebrity who apparently said in the interview that “You Can Choose Happiness”! Rolling my eyes, I continue to wait in line.
Yet, on my rainy day drive, I couldn’t shake that headline. Why didn’t I like it? Don’t I want to choose happiness in my life? Yes, sometimes I think we kick from ourselves to ‘suck it up’, and move on to greener, happier pastures. However, I don’t always think that is possible and more importantly, I also don’t always think that is best.
Why? Well, Rumi states it best in the Guest House:“This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.”
The point is to welcome each stranger as they come. You have enough chairs, hors d’oeuvres and hostessing skills. No one should be left out. Say yes to that guest.
So, can one choose happiness? I believe yes, most of the time. However, happiness is not the only guest we should welcome with open arms.
