How to Be Alone: Celebrate

Two men were driving along the coast. One misplaced pothole, and they were stuck with a flat. No spare, no cell phone reception, no sign of civilization.

“UGH. This just BLOWS”, sighed one man kicking the busted tire. The other quietly opened the trunk and pulled out a bottle of champage.

“What is that for?” the first man asked, clearly frustrated by his friends nonchalance.

“For celebrating. Here’s a moment to do just that”.

I love this sentiment. Carrying around a bottle of champage for celebrating, whenever.

Tomorrow is my birthday! I spent the weekend with many great people- friends and family alike. From dinners, to dancing, belly laughs to bear hugs, our time was divine!

And it has been for ages. In the last few years my birthday has morphed into somewhat of an … event. To prove my point, some of my friends’ statements from the weekend:

I need to take a page from your book- your birthdays are always killer!

plus

I’m so impressed by how organized this all is!

and

You are clearly very loved!

Yes, I do birthdays. Big. Not just my own, but those that I love as well. I love celebrating!

To me, it is not the need to be the center of attention, rather it is taking a moment. A breather. A time of appreciation-  to love, to laugh, and to just live. This time on earth flies by so quickly… we better make sure we step back to let the glory of it all soak in.

So this week’s tip for our How to Be Alone series…CELEBRATE! Either with hosting a 17 person dinner, taking a good friend out in appreciation of them, or doing something just for you that you love.

Maybe then we will learn how to:

“Fly free and happy beyond birthdays and across forever, and we’ll meet now and then when we wish, in the midst of the one celebration that never can end”.
